The Indianapolis Zoo is a wonderful resource for class field trips for students in central Indiana, as well as those who are able to make the trip from a further distance. During a trip to the Indianapolis Zoo, children have the opportunity see and sometimes interact with animals they may never get a chance to see or interact with otherwise.
Zoo exhibits include a variety of habitats including plains, deserts, forests, and oceans. A dolphin show is run every day at 10:30am and 2:30pm, and passes to the show are given at the gate. Relatively new to the zoo is an Oceans exhibit presented by Old National Bank that allows guests to touch smooth dog sharks.
Admission to the zoo also includes the White River Gardens where students can exam various plants in the outside gardens and also explore the visiting Hilbert Conservatory. The Conservatory shows change each year, so those interested in making a field trip to the zoo may want to check the website to learn more about the current status of the Hilbert Conservatory.
The zoo has a wonderful webpage with tons of information about the zoo. Of particular interest to those thinking of taking their class on a field trip is a link titled “field trip” which can be found under the Education tab at the top of the zoo homepage. The field trip page provides detailed information about pricing as well as tips for a successful field trip. Also under the education tab is a fantastic link titled “Teacher Resources” this link contains information about educational kits and curriculum offered by the zoo to interested teachers.
